Learning science in English is about much more than just acquiring vocabulary. It is about discovering, experimenting and developing a curious outlook on the world whilst strengthening language skills. This was demonstrated by our 3rd Primary students during a hands-on workshop on the Earth’s layers as part of their Science lessons, one of the subjects that forms part of our bilingual programme. Teaching Science in English forms part of Cumbres’ educational programme, where over 50 per cent of the curriculum is delivered in this language from an early age.
Through an active and experiential methodology, our students have learnt about the internal structure of our planet, identifying and understanding the characteristics of its different layers: the crust, mantle and core. Through hands-on activities and participatory exercises, they have transformed complex scientific concepts into meaningful and relatable learning experiences.
Experiences of this kind allow English to be learnt naturally and within a contextualised framework, enhancing understanding of academic content whilst developing communication skills in a second language. Furthermore, they foster key skills such as observation, critical thinking, scientific curiosity and collaborative work.
At Cumbres, we are committed to a bilingual model that integrates the language into real-life learning situations. The Science subject thus becomes an opportunity for our students to discover the world from an international perspective, acquiring scientific knowledge and building their confidence to communicate naturally in English.
